Looking For Eliza

The book cover for Looking For Eliza by Leaf Arbuthnot

Genuinely uplifting and well written books are worth their weight in gold, especially at the moment when we could all do with a little warmth and distraction. Looking For Eliza is a real find, all the more so for being a debut novel. The characters are achingly real, author Leaf Arbuthnot has a real ear for dialogue, and the arc of action feels a little like an old school French movie: a little happens…but enormous change occurs in the lives of the protagonists.

Ada is newly widowed and adrift; young doctoral student Eliza feels out of place in Oxford and in her own life. They’re geographically close, but apparently worlds apart. Each is reeling with loneliness.

There’s some beautiful language here, characters to fall in love with and a story you won’t want to end when Ada and Eliza’s worlds meet.
